“But select from all the people some capable, honest men who fear God and hate bribes. Appoint them as leaders over groups of one thousand, one hundred, fifty, and ten.”
Exodus 18:21 (NLT)
Today we see where Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, brought Moses’ wife and two sons to him at Mount Sinai. Moses shared all the wonderful things that the LORD had done for them to deliver them from Egypt. Then Moses sat down to judge the disputes of the people. When Jethro saw Moses doing this from morning until evening, he told him that this was not good. Both he and the people would soon be worn out because this was too much for him to bear alone.
Jethro gave Moses a lesson in the art of delegation, and it was wise advice. Moses followed it and appointed able men. They judged the small cases, and they brought the hard cases to Moses. This freed Moses to represent the people before God and to instruct the people in the ways of God. It also empowered others to share the responsibilities of leadership.
We must all decide what we are gifted and called to do and set our priorities accordingly. The apostles did this in the early church, appointing seven deacons to handle the food distribution program, so they could give themselves to prayer and the ministry of the Word.
Every Sunday I am so thankful for the many people who arrive very early at the school where we meet to set everything up so that we can worship together. I am able to focus on preparing my heart to teach, and they are able to serve the Lord in a way that suits them and they enjoy.
Do you know your gift and calling? Are you making it a priority to worship the Lord by offering yourself to Him? You may need to delegate things to others, but what a blessing it is to serve the Lord in the place where He gives you grace!
