“If you do not return it and your neighbor cries out to me for help, then I will hear, for I am merciful.”
Exodus 22:27 (NLT)
It seems that superheroes never go out of style. I remember growing up and watching Superman as a black and white television series. Then came the Batman and Robin TV series–always in two parts. At the end of the first episode, Batman would always be in some predicament of impending doom. Then the announcer would say, “To be continued next week. Same Bat-time; same Bat-channel.” Today we have the DC and Marvel movie franchises. We empathize with characters who overcome evil to do good. But do we stop to think that God is a Superhero?
In today’s passage of Scripture, we see how God cares for strangers, widows and orphans. He also protects virgins who may have had their innocence stolen from them. God defends those who cannot defend themselves. He overcomes evil to do good. If we imitate God by making right choices to care for others, then we are superheroes too.
That means not being afraid to get involved when we see innocent ones suffering. That means standing courageously against bullies and liars. We protect those who cannot defend themselves.
Maybe they won’t make a comic book about you, but by God’s grace, you can be a superhero nonetheless! What need do you notice today? How can you help?
