The Healer

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” (Luke 4:18-19, NIV)

Jesus entered a world not unlike our own. As a missionary doctor bringing medicine to infected villagers, Jesus came to people to heal them of the disease of sin. Sin is insidious, like a spreading cancer. It is incurable by human measures. All the money, rehabilitation and restraints people throw at it fail to conquer its terrible power. It kills humanity, and even infects the church.

But the good news is that Jesus is the cure. God anointed Him for this very purpose. His truth penetrates to our inner most being where sin has lodged itself. It is a miracle cure that destroys sin at its root. It is the single medicine that can free us from the deadly disease. The sickness of sin causes blindness. We don’t even see how sick we are. But the salve Jesus gives opens our eyes to the truth.

I have been around some physicians who have all the right medicine but have a poor bedside manner. But Jesus is not that way. He pities His patients. He has compassion upon their ailment. He suffers with them in their pain. With utmost tenderness and patience He cures us of the disease along with its lingering power to weaken. And with Jesus you won’t be paying medical bills for years to come, for His treatment costs you nothing. He has already paid the price with His own blood.

All Jesus requires of us is that we believe in Him and that we come to Him for the cure. Now He makes the house call. Are we ready to be healed and set free?
