“Then Joseph said to the people, “Look, today I have bought you and your land for Pharaoh. I will provide you with seed so you can plant the fields.’”
Genesis 47:23 (NLT)
Joseph is a great example of a faithful man, which is a rare breed.
“Most men will proclaim each his own goodness, but who can find a faithful man?”
Proverbs 20:6 (NKJV)
The dictionary definition of faithful is: “steadfast in affection or allegiance” or “firm in adherence to promises or in observance of duty.” In every way Joseph was a faithful man. He provided well for his family by moving them into the fertile region of Goshen. He wisely administrated the Egyptian food program with controlled compassion. He carried out his father’s wishes in burying him in the tomb of Abraham, Sarah, Isaac and Leah.
The apostle Paul wrote to the Corinthians:
“Let a man so consider us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. Moreover, it is required in stewards that one be found faithful.”
1 Corinthians 4:1–2 (NKJV)
It is interesting that God isn’t looking for talent as much as for faithfulness. My pastor used to say that when all is said and done, the people God uses are those who just keep showing up. Sadly, many people think little of breaking their promises. They don’t show up even when they’ve made a commitment to be there.
So, what does God expect of us?
“He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?”
Micah 6:8 (NKJV)
In the end, being faithful means pleasing one Person. Are you pleasing Him today?
