Exodus 3:13-22 “The Name of the LORD”

“Then Moses said to God, ‘If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?’”

Exodus 3:13 (ESV)

What is in a name? Well, it depends on whose name it is. The name of the LORD is unlike any other.

Moses had great reservations about going back to Egypt. How would he be received? He asked the LORD, “Who shall I say sent me?”

“And God said to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM.’ And He said, ‘Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’’”

Exodus 3:14 (NKJV)

The name of God is YHWH. No one really knows how to pronounce it. It is a derivative of a Hebrew word meaning “to be”. Therefore, God told Moses, “Tell them I AM has sent me to you.”

The LORD is the Becoming One. Whatever we need is what He becomes to us.

  • Do you need peace? He is your peace (Judges 6:24).
  • Do you need righteousness? He is your righteousness (Jeremiah 33:16).
  • Do you need healing? He is your healer (Exodus 15:26).
  • Do you need provision? He is your provider (Genesis 22:14).

So what is it that you need today? What deficiency do you have for which God’s grace is sufficient? Why not reach out to Him today and humbly ask for His help? And after He has helped you, then be thankful and ask Him how you can be His instrument to help someone else. This is how we can glorify the name of the LORD through gratitude and actions.
