Exodus 17 “Water from the Rock”

by

Are you thirsty for spiritual reality?

“‘Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock in Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink.’” And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.”

Exodus 17:6 (NKJV)

Can you think of a time when you were really, really thirsty? Maybe you were working in the hot summer sun, or maybe you had an intense workout. Perhaps you were traveling, and there was no rest stop or gas station for a hundred miles.

When the children of Israel had no water in the desert, it was a major crisis. They complained and contended with Moses. He was even afraid that they would stone him! So, Moses cried out to the LORD.

God told him that He would stand before him on the rock in Horeb. Moses would strike the rock with his rod, and water would come out. Then the people could drink.

The LORD was creating a beautiful picture. As Moses struck the rock, bringing forth life-giving water, so Jesus would be struck on the cross, and He would give living water to everyone who believes in Him.

“On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, ‘If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’”

John 7:37–38 (NKJV)

John tells us that Jesus spoke this concerning the Holy Spirit whom He would give to those who believe in Him. Have you received this promise from God? Some people think that this was only for the early church. But not Peter…

“For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”

Acts 2:39 (NKJV)

I believe that the greatest need of the church today is for Christians to be filled with the Holy Spirit. This living water from the Rock, Jesus Christ, satisfies our every need. It quenches our spiritual thirst. It is an inner fountain, welling up, flowing out, and bringing love, life, and peace to others. Are you thirsty to be filled with the Spirit? This water is free to anyone who comes to Jesus and drinks. It is the only thing that satisfies your thirsty soul. Will you come to Jesus today confessing your need and believing in His marvelous gift? Will you drink deeply of His Spirit?
