What is the most beautiful clothing you can wear?

“The craftsmen made beautiful sacred garments of blue, purple, and scarlet cloth—clothing for Aaron to wear while ministering in the Holy Place, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.”

Exodus 39:1 (NLT)

Exodus 39 could be called the obedience chapter, because nine times the phrase “as the LORD commanded Moses” is used (or something similar). It is refreshing that the people actually did what they were told! They didn’t think they knew better; they didn’t think their rights of free artistic expression were being taken away. They simply made the garments of the high priest and other priests as God instructed them, believing that God knew best. Surely, this is the secret of receiving the blessing of God. Just do what He says and trust Him with the results!

Now the priests wore plain white linen garments. There was nothing to attract anyone to their sharp looking threads! The only color was the sash of fine woven linen with blue, purple, and scarlet thread. These were the same colors as the ephod of the high priest.

Now Jesus is our faithful High Priest, but we are a “royal priesthood” (1 Peter 2:9). We are just ordinary people, but we have been equipped to do extraordinary things because of the righteousness imputed to us by faith in Jesus Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit. However, just as the priests girded themselves with the colorful sash, so we gird ourselves with the character of Jesus. He holds us together and helps us not to react in our flesh, but rather to walk in the Spirit. By His grace, we bear the fruit of the Spirit, the characteristics of Christ.

“Clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature.”

Romans 13:14 (NIV)

Just like we put on our clothing every day, we must consciously and consistently clothe ourselves with Jesus. This means crucifying our flesh with its passions and desires and submitting to the Spirit’s rule. It’s not easy, but it is the blessed life.
