Clean House

“But now you also, put them all aside: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive speech from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, since you laid aside the old self with its evil practices.” (Colossians 3:8-9, NASB95)

We are busy making changes in our house. Justin is moving into my office, Ali is moving into Justin’s room, and I’m moving my office into Ali’s room. We’ve found this to be the most creative way to clean house! It forces us to go through everything—keeping some things while throwing others away.

When we invite Jesus into our lives, the Holy Spirit takes residence in our “house”. He wants to redecorate the inside with beautiful new furnishings—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control—the fruit of the Spirit. But first He must remove the junk of the old life—anger, rage, malice, slander and filthy language. Lies are the first thing to go, because everyone knows that lies stink! But the Holy Spirit won’t do it without our cooperation. We must be willing.

I’ve known some people who are pack rats. They hold on to everything because they think that someday they will need it. I can understand them because when it comes to books, I can’t bring myself to get rid of any of them. So I build bigger bookshelves! But I digress…

When it comes to the junk of the old life, we don’t always want to get rid of it. The Holy Spirit stands by, ready to help, but we must give Him the garbage sack. This is the way we clean our house, clean our house, clean our house…¯

Tomorrow we’ll see how J.C. Furnishings will give your house a complete makeover!
