“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” (Colossians 3:1-2, NIV)
Did you know the Bible teaches that Christians are really two places at once? We are here on earth–wherever you are reading this. And we are also seated with Christ in heavenly places (Eph 2:6). Our life is now hidden with Him (Col 3:3). Since this is our destiny and our eternal dwelling place, Paul tells us to set our hearts and minds on these heavenly things.
When I was a child, Christmas eve was always the longest night. I was so excited that I kept waking up hoping the morning had arrived. Though it was night and I was in bed, my heart and mind was on opening presents and playing with toys in the morning!
Likewise, while we are still in this world, we should think on the world to come. That helps us keep our perspective. It prevents us from getting ensnared by the things of this life that are passing away. If we fix our hearts and minds on eternity, then we will live for eternity, and our lives will give off the heavenly fragrance of Christ.
So keep looking up! The night may be long, but Christmas morning is coming!
