“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give some of the hidden manna to eat. And I will give him a white stone, and on the stone a new name written which no one knows except him who receives it.” (Revelation 2.17, NKJV)
The Lord is always seeking those who will overcome. Even in the most impure church Christ finds those who rise above the muck. The church of Pergamos had its problems, but the Lord gave blessings to those who would listen, repent and overcome.
To them, Jesus promised some of the hidden manna. This is the bread from heaven, which if a person eats, he or she will have eternal life. This hidden manna is none other than Christ Himself who is the Bread of life (John 6.49-58).
Jesus would also give the victors a white stone with a new name written on it that only the person who receives it knows. The white stone was a symbol of approval. Whatever their sins had been, He would forgive, accept and encourage them. The new name was according to Jesus’ pattern. He changed Simon’s name to Peter, Saul’s name to Paul. But this new name will be between Him and us–like a secret name between lovers.
Jesus extends His hand of mercy and second chance to you today. Whatever mistakes you have made in the past, He is willing to take hold of you and give you a fresh start. Yesterday is gone, but the eyes of heaven fall upon you when you turn from failure and look up. He will nourish, encourage and love you with His perfect love. After all, you are His beloved Bride.
